Addressing a vital and growing need
As medical science has advanced, one of the major challenges in hospital and long-term care, as well as in homecare of the elderly, has largely remained unsolved: the safe, dignified transfer of people to and from bed. In even the most advanced hospitals and nursing homes, nurses, aides and other staff risk pain and injury when lifting patients from reclining to sitting and standing positions and back again. Spouses and other family members of recuperating and aging people, themselves often elderly, are at particular risk of serious injury when helping another adult from a reclining to standing position.

The difficulty of lifting patients into sitting and standing positions also has serious medical ramifications as spending long periods of time in a prone position can lead to respiratory complications, muscle atrophy, bladder infections, digestive problems, and more.
As the number of people living beyond 65 and into their 80s and 90s has increased, the demand for solutions that support aging in place (i.e. in one’s own home) has grown. Similarly, in recent years government focus on preventing injuries of patients and caregivers, which lead to high costs of care and in lost work days, has also intensified.
